HISTORY OF THE WANDERERS GOLF CLUB

Many words have been written about Victor Kent, whose vision was probably the most important single factor in ensuring the survival of The Wanderers Club after the Second World War.

It was he who took upon himself the decision to purchase the land now known as Kent park in Illovo. The fact that he as the chairman of The Wanderers Club, made the commitment without consulting his fellow committee members gives us an insight into his opinion of the far sightedness of the other members of that committee.

REGULATIONS & ETIQUETTE OF THE GAME

All members are required to observe the rules and etiquette of golf.
Adherence to these rules ensures that members do not suffer through lack of consideration.

Special attention is drawn to the following:

1.Adhere strictly to the time sheets and be on the tee seven minutes before your time.
2.Kindly keep your place In the field, if unable to do so, signal, the match behind you to play through.
3.Divot holes must be filled with sand.
4.All bunkers in be repaired. Leave rakes inside the bunker.
5.No one should move or talk or stand directly behind the ball or the hole when a player is making a stroke.
6.Only you and your caddie may look for a lost ball.
7.Walk around the greens and tees, not over them. Park your golf cart behind the green and to the side nearest to the next teeing ground.
8.Leave the green immediately after the hole has been completed.
9.Don't practice on the fairways.
10.Help keep the course clean.
11.See that the caddie does not damage the hole when removing and replacing the flags back.
12.Bear with your caddie, he is probably doing his best.
13.Remember to repair pitch marks on the greens and stamp down spike marks after everyone has putted out.

Bad Weather

When the siren sounds please immediately leave the course and return to the clubhouse, halfway house or rain shelters. Play may only continue when the siren sounds twice.

Lost ball

If a player believes his ball may be lost outside a water hazard or it is out of bounds, to save time, he should play a provisional ball. Players searching for a ball should signal the players in the group behind them to play through as soon as it becomes apparent that the ball will not easily be found. They should not search for five minutes before doing so. Having allowed the group behind to play through, they should not continue play until that group has passed and is out of range.

Priority on the course

Unless otherwise determined by the committee, priority on the course is determined by a group's pace of play. Any group playing a whole round is entitled to pass a group playing a shorter round.

Safety

Players should ensure that no one is standing close by or in a position to be hit by the club, the ball or any stones, pebbles, twigs or the like when they make a stroke or practice swing. Players should not play until the players in front are out of range. Players should always alert players nearby or ahead when they are about to make a stroke that might endanger them.
If a player plays a ball in a direction where there is a danger of hitting someone, he should immediately shout a warning. The traditional word of warning in such situations is 'fore'.

THE WANDERERS CLUB

ACCOMMODATION IN ILLOVO

The Wanderers Club was established in down town Johannesburg in 1888. It was located were the current railway station is and was moved to its current site in 1946.

The club is famous for its cricket stadium which has held many exciting test matches over the years. In 1988 the stadium was, unfortunately, sold to the Johannesburg municipality who leased the stadium to the Gauteng Cricket Board.
Whilst Ellis Park was being rebuilt during the 1970's rugby test matches were also held at the cricket stadium.
